Elizabethtown, NC - Cole Butler, a versatile linebacker of Elizabethtown, NC and East Bladen High School has officially signed to continue his football career at Wingate University on Thursday.
Butler, who started as a safety before transitioning to middle linebacker, is eager to bring his skills and leadership to the next level.
"I started out as a safety, but throughout my years, they moved me around," Butler said. "I ended up at middle linebacker, and that's what I'm trying to go play as."
The position switch helped Butler develop a well-rounded understanding of the game, learning different techniques and the patience required to play linebacker.

Now, as he prepares to compete at the collegiate level, Butler is looking forward to embracing new challenges.
"Just getting to learn new stuff, getting to meet new people, and playing against the best of the best," Butler said when asked what excites him most about the jump to college football.
Butler had the chance to visit Wingate’s campus last summer, spending two weeks there for a camp. The experience helped in his decision, as he felt comfortable with the environment and the people.
"It was really good," Butler recalled. "The campus is really nice, and the people there are really, really good."
As for the coaching staff, Butler has a deep respect for their approach.
"They're really good coaches and really good people," he said. "But I’ve seen the tough side of them, too. They can get really hard on you, but it's all about pushing you to be better."
Butler has also started connecting with future teammates, bonding over shared small-town roots and interests.
"I’ve met some of them, and we’ve got similar interests," he said. "A bunch of guys like to hunt and fish, so I’ve gotten along with them really well."
His high school career was marked by strong performances, earning him All-Conference honors in the Waccamaw Conference and 2nd Team All-Defense from the Bucks Sweep Sports Podcast.
Reflecting on his journey, he credits his success to the unwavering support of his family, friends, and coaches.
"If it weren’t for them pushing me through, I might have quit at times," Butler admitted. "But they kept me going."
As he takes the next step at Wingate, Butler’s determination and passion for the game promise to make him a key addition to the Bulldogs' defense.
