East Bladen Softball continues to demonstrate resilience as they work to secure a playoff spot, despite a challenging week on the diamond.
With two key games on Tuesday and Wednesday, the team’s 7-7 record and 6-6 Waccamaw Conference standing show they’re still in the hunt, with two non-conference games remaining in the regular season to strengthen their playoff positioning.
Tuesday Night: East Bladen 7, South Columbus 8
Tabor City, NC - It was a tough battle for East Bladen on Tuesday night, as they fell to South Columbus in a game that saw the home team rally late.
After leading for much of the game, East Bladen was unable to hold off a strong finish from South Columbus, who scored seven runs in the final two innings to snatch the win.
Martha Simmons was a key contributor, not only crossing the plate three times but also recording three hits and driving in an RBI. Tatum Allen had a stellar performance at the plate as well, scoring twice and collecting three hits, including two RBIs.
Niyah Wooten chipped in with a run scored and two hits, while Jenna Brice helped out with a hit and two RBIs.
In the circle, Gracie Edwards started strong, throwing 5.1 innings of solid work, allowing just one hit but issuing seven walks, while fanning four batters. Jenna Brice came in for relief and pitched one inning, striking out three while allowing four hits and no walks.
Wednesday Night: East Bladen 1, Whiteville 5
Whiteville, NC - The next night saw East Bladen face off against a formidable Whiteville team. Despite a strong pitching performance from Jenna Brice, who went the distance, tossing six innings, striking out seven and allowing just two earned runs, the offense struggled to generate enough support.
Martha Simmons was once again a bright spot, scoring East Bladen’s only run and contributing one hit.
Taylor Dowless and Gracie Clark each collected a hit, while Jenna Brice added an RBI to her solid performance in the circle.
Niyah Wooten had two hits, providing a spark at the plate, but East Bladen couldn’t capitalize on opportunities.
While East Bladen fought hard, the night ultimately belonged to Whiteville, who capitalized on their chances and secured the 5-1 win.
East Bladen’s season is far from over, and with two non-conference games left to play, they are determined to finish strong.
Their next challenge will be to continue battling and ensure they finish the regular season on a high note, improving their playoff seeding and pushing toward a potential postseason run.
The team will return to action following Spring Break on Monday, April 28th against Clinton on the road.
