TAR HEEL, NC — When Donavan Worley walks into the Tar Heel Middle School gym for the first game of the year, it won’t just be another coaching stop.

For the Whiteville native, it’s the start of a new chapter — one where he’s committed to building both a winning tradition and a strong community around Tar Heel athletics.

Worley, a graduate of UNC Pembroke with a Bachelor of Science degree in K-12 Health and Physical Education, has been on the sidelines and in the classroom for years.

He started in Whiteville City Schools, coaching JV basketball to an undefeated conference championship, while also being assistant coach in girls’ track, varsity basketball, and football.

After that, he spent a year at West Columbus Middle School, coaching football under Dr. Peggy Hester.

Now, he’s stepping into the role once held by Brett Jackson, who recently took over as West Bladen High School’s Athletic Director, and he’s eager to put his stamp on Tar Heel’s program.

“I have a good bit of experience when it comes to running things and creating a successful, winning, and positive culture,” Worley said. “I know how to pull people together for the good of our youth and our school.”

For Worley, the job goes beyond scheduling games and making sure uniforms are ready.

He wants to be visible in the community, to make athletics a rallying point for Tar Heel students, parents, and supporters.

“I believe in being active in the community,” he said. “This is an all-hands-on-deck experience. I look forward to working with staff, parents, and students to have a successful year and to keep building and improving Tar Heel Middle School athletics.”

And while the wins are important, Worley’s eyes are on a bigger prize — preparing students for life beyond middle school.

“I want our kids to leave here ready to flourish in high school,” he said. “That means being great people who turn into successful citizens and great students, both in and out of the classroom.”

With the new school year approaching, Worley is already thinking about the first whistle, the first home crowd, and the first opportunity to show what Tar Heel Middle School can do — on the field, on the court, and in the community.
